Rhythm of the National Dance•Contrast: When Dance Meets Digital Art

Rhythm of the National Dance performance, supported by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao S.A.R., is organised by the Chinese Dancers Association, MGM Macau, and Macau Dancers Association, and co-organised by the Centre for Arts and Design of the University of Macau. Internationally acclaimed TAO Dance Theater, musician Xiao He, and ink animation artist Lampo Leong, Distinguished Professor of the University of Macau, are invited to present an interdisciplinary collaborative performance at the world-class MGM theatre in MGM Cotai, which has the world’s largest interior 4K LED monitor equivalent to 3 tennis courts.
TAO Dance Theatre, founded by Tao Ye, Duan Ni and Wang Hao, is the first modern dance troupe in China to be invited to perform at the Lincoln Center Art Festival in the United States, Edinburgh International Art Festival in the United Kingdom, Sydney Opera House in Australia and Theatre de la Villie in France. They have also been invited to perform at the American Dance Festival (ADF) and served as resident artists. Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London has invited the company to perform in London five times.  They have performed all over the world on five continents, in more than 40 countries and over 100 different art festivals. Time Out New York has also named the troupe’s performances one of the “10 Best Dance Shows of 2014”. TAO Dance Theatre has become one of the most outstanding modern dance troupes on the international stage.
Live music improviser Xiao He is a composer and music producer, sponsor of the Nursery Rhyme Program and Music Portrait.
Lampo Leong is currently a Distinguished Professor, Doctoral Advisor, Head of Department of Arts and Design, and Director of Center for Arts and Design at the University of Macau. Leong is also a Tenured Professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia in the USA and Visiting Professor at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts.  Leong’s work has been featured in Christie’s and in art museums and galleries worldwide through more than 70 solo and over 400 juried and curated national and international group exhibitions, and has received over 90 awards.  Leong’s works can be found in more than ten museum collections including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University, as well as public art commissions for Columbia City Hall, and an 8-meter-diameter granite medallion for a San Francisco city park.  Leong’s achievements have been documented in over 1000 reviews and publications internationally, including the front cover of the New Art International in New York, the Creative Genius: 100 Contemporary Artists in London, and Art Frontier in the United States.
The ink animation featured in the performance is created by Lampo Leong and Yanxiu Zhao. With digital technologies, contemporary ink art is pushed towards abstraction, postmodernism, and integrated with the body language of the modern dancers. People from all walks of life are welcome to this world-class theater to experience the unique charm of cross-disciplinary art performance.
